How Sober Homes Help Reduce Relapse + Support Recovery
Everyone in recovery has the right to safe and livable housing in Massachusetts, whether you are looking to rent or own, or to live in certified sober housing. In any phase of recovery, housing is important in making a person feel safe and connected to their community. You have rights and protections through all stages of getting and keeping your housing.
Sober Homes, also known as alcohol- and drug-free housing, can offer people in recovery a safe and positive environment where they pay rent. These group living homes ensure that people in recovery are not alone, and they can share their success and support with others reaching for the same goal. The Massachusetts Fair Housing law prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, religion, nationality, age, ancestry, military background or service, gender, gender identity, sexuality, marital status, familial status (for example, if you have children), source of income (for example, a Section 8 voucher or RAFT), or disability. Under this law, a person in treatment and on medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), for example, cannot be denied housing.
What Is a Sober Home?
A sober home (also called sober living or recovery housing) is a safe, alcohol- and drug-free residence that supports individuals in early recovery. Unlike inpatient rehab, sober homes allow residents to live more independently while still maintaining structure and accountability.
At Power of Recovery, our sober homes combine freedom with responsibility, helping residents reintegrate into daily life while staying committed to sobriety.
Why Choose Power of Recovery Recommended Sober Homes?
Choosing the right sober living environment is critical. At Power of Recovery, we go beyond just providing housing recommendations; we create a community of healing and growth.
Key Benefits:
- Structured Living Environment – Clear rules and expectations that support sobriety
- Peer Support Community – Live alongside others committed to recovery
- Accountability Measures – Regular check-ins and drug/alcohol screenings
- Safe & Comfortable Housing – Clean, well-maintained homes in supportive neighborhoods
- Life Skills Development – Build routines, responsibility, and independence
Our mission is simple: to help you build a strong foundation for lifelong recovery.
Who Are Sober Homes For?
Our sober homes are ideal for individuals who:
- Have completed detox or inpatient treatment
- Are committed to maintaining sobriety
- Need a stable, supportive environment
- Want to transition back into work, school, or daily life
- Are seeking accountability and structure
If you're asking, “Do I need sober living?”—the answer is often yes if you want to reduce relapse risk.
What to Expect in a Sober Living Program
At Power of Recovery, we focus on creating a balanced environment that promotes both independence and support.
Daily Life Includes:
- Attending recovery meetings (AA, NA, or similar)
- Participating in house meetings
- Maintaining employment or actively seeking work
- Completing household responsibilities
- Following curfews and house guidelines
Our homes are not just places to stay, they are places to grow, heal, and rebuild your life.
The Importance of Structured Recovery Housing
Studies show that individuals in sober living environments have higher long-term sobriety success rates compared to those who return directly to unstructured environments.
Why? Because sober homes provide:
- Reduced exposure to triggers
- Strong peer accountability
- Consistent routines
- Emotional and social support
A Community That Supports You
Recovery is not meant to be done alone. One of the biggest advantages of our sober homes is the sense of community.
Residents form meaningful connections, support each other through challenges, and celebrate milestones together. This peer-driven environment helps build:
- Trust
- Responsibility
- Confidence
- Long-term friendships
Many of our residents say the relationships they build here become a cornerstone of their recovery.
Transitioning to Independent Living
Our ultimate goal is to prepare you for independent, sober living.
During your stay, you will:
- Develop healthy routines
- Strengthen coping skills
- Build financial responsibility
- Re-establish personal and professional goals
When you leave, you won’t just be sober, you'll be prepared to restart life.
